Connecting Spindle Motor to Controller

Here's one for y'all! I am trying to wire a BLDC spindle motor to a controller. The motor did not come with wiring diagram or manual.

The spindle has two bundles of wires coming from it. A bundle of three thick wires (blue, yellow, and green) and a bundle of thin wires (red, black, white, blue, and brown). I attached pic of both bundles.

I need a little help understanding which wire goes where on my controller. I've attached 2 pictures of the connection points on the controller.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Zero answers?!?! Come on ....

I think we need a bit more info Michael, a brand name, supplier, a picture of the spindle - something. Unless a user has one of the same and can help out the colours don't mean a lot. We can speculate though: perhaps Red goes to Hall Power, Black goes to Hall Gnd (from 4th Image) and the Blue White and Brown go to Hall A, Hall B, Hall C (also from 4th Image) but not necessarily in that order. No guarantees though. If the Red and Black are power I don't think you can blow anything up by incorrectly wiring these three.

The three large wires I would think go to Phase A, Phase B, and Phase C (3rd Image) . Don't know the order though. Again I don't think the incorrect way around will cause any grief.

Something for you to think about while waiting for another to comment. Cheers, Patrick

I came to the same conclusion Patrick, but didn't have time to reply when I first saw the question.

Regarding the three phase wires reversing just two wires will change the direction of spin on the spindle, so if the motor turns in wrong direction when a CW command is issued swap any two wires to fix it.

One thing you'll need to add to the setup is a ground wire from the Motor Gnd terminal to a ground point on the motor.

The motor may not have come with any info, but surely there is a wiring diagram supplied with the controller? Even with that we can work out what wires go where.

Arie.

Thanks Arie. After thinking about it Michael getting the 3 + 5 wires in their correct hole is only the beginning. I note in image #4 you have other input pins that need to be wired somewhere, e.g. 1) Direction + & - and 2) Freewheel + & - and maybe more that are hidden from this pix. To get the spindle turning the correct voltages will need to be connected to at least some of these pins. But perhaps you have the wiring diagram for these - I hope so. Cheers, Patrick

Thanks for all the advice here. Soon after testing a few wiring combos, my controller would no longer come on at all. I disconnected ALL wires and only fed power to the unit. Nothing at all happened when I plugged it in...

In desperation, I opened up my $600 spindle controller ... I found a blown fuse. It's buried between two circuit boards. Now to get a new fuse. At least now I know how NOT to connect it ?

In other news, the X, Y, and Z axis ClearPath motors work GREAT! I was able to draw a perfect circle with a marker inserted into my non- spinning spindle chuck.
