Controller layout

This is kind of an offshoot of this thread but I thought it should probably be in its own thread. I picked up a used Hoffman enclosure on ebay pretty cheap, so that's what I'm using. I'm trying to take advantage of the existing DIN rails in there, and will add some cable channels on the interior side and bottom walls. I'm wondering if this seems like a reasonable layout. The Priority Mail box represents the 48V/400W power supply that came with my Mega V. I haven't removed that from the original controller box yet.

The stepper drivers are there for spacing - the actual drivers are about the same size, but there are three, so the two you see here represent the outer two. The third would be in the middle.

For the Masso, I'd need to drill holes on both the left and right side of the cabinet for the pendant, VGA and USB, and one on top for the Wifi antenna mount. AC power would come in through the bottom, into the terminal blocks that came with the enclosure, and then out to the power supplies from there.

On the front panel, one of the round holes would be for the E-stop button. The other would likely be a master power switch. I'll put some plexiglass in the rectangular opening so you can see inside. Not sure why that photo came out rotated, the two round holes are supposed to be on the bottom so the box orientation is like you see in the first image.

Does this seem like a sane layout?

Perry,

That layout is good, but - there is always a but, it could be the angle of the photo, you may need to lower MASSO a bit to provide you access to the wiring on the top connectors. Also you'll need cooling vents/fans because the drivers and it's power supply can get quite warm.

I bought these for inlet vents and fan covers. 5 pcs Gdstime Plastic Cover 80mm 8cm 3 inch Dustproof Computer PC Case Dust Grill Filter For AC DC Fan 80mm*80mm You can see then in the photo I posted in your previous topic. As a side note these have doubled in price since I purchased them in Nov 2017.

Regards,

Arie.

Thanks. I have a few similar grates in a box down in the basement somewhere, so I was thinking of using those. I think passive cooling will probably be fine if there are grates on both the bottom and top, but the opening will be 120mm anyway, so if I need to put a fan in one, that's easy enough and it can plug right into the 12v power supply.

The Masso is about 1.5" below the top, so there's plenty of room for the wiring, but there's also room to lower it a bit. I went ahead and ordered a new 48V PSU for the steppers that's DIN mount, and that will be here on Friday. It's significantly smaller, so both DIN PSUs will go on the bottom rail next to the terminal block. I have more terminal block bits and pieces in a drawer somewhere, so I'll use that for the low voltage patching up on a higher rail. Overall it should be pretty roomy in there.
