Feedrate override question

Folks,

I've spent about 10 hours learning about the Masso G3 to see if it's what I need at my company. We plan on starting with 2, one to replace my custom PSoC5 GRBL hardware design and another is a very old mill with a dying Milltronics controller. There are a few Masso items we can workaround but today I stumbled on dynamic feedrate. We have novice operators who rely on starting all jobs with the feedrate override at minimum. They also don't quite have experience with feeds and speeds, so often they dial in feedrate to get chip size close. I attached two machine control panel pictures showing our knobs which alter the feedrate from 0 to 200%. These knobs control both jog and job speeds. I hope Masso supports this, otherwise this is a show stopper.

I'm willing to be a beta tester if needed. I'm a circuit designer/firmware developer with 40 years of experience. I'd offer valuable feedback and will be patient.

Please let me know if job feedrate override exists and I'll order 2 tomorrow from US distributor.

Hi Craig,

Masso does have feedrate overide and it goes between 20 and 100%

To use it you press the F11 key and use either the + & - keys to adjust the feedrate or use the pendant MPG to adjust speed which is a nicer way of doing it.

Likewise you can adjust the Spindle speed 10 -150% using the F12 key and use either the + & - keys to adjust the feedrate or use the pendant MPG

If your novice machinists set the feedrate at the maximum or little faster than they think it will be in Gcode, then they can start at as low as 20% of this speed and move up the the maximum. The 100% limit might be handy in stopping over enthusiastic feedrates.

I couldn't figure this out from the docs, https://docs.masso.com.au/wiring-and-setup/setup-and-calibration/mpg-pendant. Just mentions it's possible, nothing about the 20-100% range or actually how the speed is changed. I didn't see this in any video either. How do you change the feed rate with the MPG?

Should I suggest a feature that one of the unused analog inputs be used for feed override? And another for spindle?

When you override, value other than 100, is this shown on the display?

The feedrate override is not in a topic of it's own but is mentioned as a foot note on the MPG page and on the Keyboard shortcuts page.

I have created a new page covering the topic which should help others in the future.

@cncnutz Peter this is the second prospective customer wanting to be able to adjust the feed rate and spindle speed via a simple pot on the analogue input (I Just turned on my Masso and tried to assign anything to either analog input to find no options at all)

I understand that you can adjust these via the keyboard but you have two analog inputs that are basically unusable as they have no assignments available and I have seen this question asked twice now, from a sales perspective it would make sense to allow them to be used at least for this feature as you have customers inquiring about this feature and for some it is a deal breaker.

@holla2040 I have recently converted a cnc router to Masso and love the controller, it runs a lot smoother than what I was running, Is easy to set up and get going, and the support from the forum is amazing. It has proven to be reliable, boots up very quickly, and just works consistantly.

I have tried other solutions but having hardware and software integrated into the one unit gives a level of stability.

@stevefrisby You've hit on the real Masso selling points: single unit solution, consistency, and stability. Fast forum support and price point also a bonus. I haven't investigated firmware release frequency, I suspect by the positive nature of this forum that customer's needs drive feature development.

When I built my 'hyatt' wood router, https://github.com/holla2040/hyatt, I wanted a tactile control panel without a touch interface (plus I wanted a real project to learn about the Cypress PSoC5 processor). Masso's input functionality permits some of this.

At our shop, we've had a variety of machines, Hass mills and lathes, that old Milltronics, Dosan 5 axis mill-turn, Miyano 7-axis mill-turn, UR, Mecademic and ABB robots. My partner formerly manufactured fly reels,
. Our needs very widely.

At this point, Masso is a drop-in replacement for our GRBL custom solutions. However, speaking with my partner, he says "cutter comp" is mandatory for other projects. We can't use Masso until cutter compensation is implemented. Searching the documentation there's no mention, nor are G40, G41 and G42 supported.

I've left 2 messages with the US CNC4PC distributor and waiting to hear back.

I bought 2 Masso controllers today with touchscreen upgrade. My business partner says we'll find a place for the second unit until cutter comp is implemented, then we'll consider buying additional controllers for our manufacturing floor. Thanks everyone for your support.

Hi Steve

The Analogue inputs on Masso are there in case of future development.

The following is my personal opinions on the matter.
There are already 2 methods of changing the Feed and speed on the fly as you mention so is time best used to develop a third almost identical method of doing the same thing or is it better spent developing new and different features. Does it really matter which dial you turn to speed up or slow down.
Bear in mind that changes made to motion control may have unintended issues, making not only the hand full of people who want a particular feature unhappy but the entire community very unhappy indeed.

Craig, I hope you enjoy your Masso purchase and the conversion goes well.
I watched the Fly reel video. Makes me wish I had time to go fishing again. Maybe in 5 months when trout fishing season opens again.

I have a pot mounted on gantry to manually control spindle on the fly. Works good no problem. Control is through my HSV (Telemecanique Altivar 31). Picture's Might Help

Hello Peter,

I was searching for information about adjusting FEEDRATE on the fly (while running a project) and found your conversation regarding this...
However the link in your reply (above) dead ends... and I can't find anything else.

Is this still a functional operation?
Obviously, the keyboard approach won't help since I have the G3 Touch... and the Pendant.

Any info appreciated.

How to use

  • Press the F11 Key on the keyboard

This is one of the reasons I added a 6 key programable USB key pad with knob to my front control panel.
For me it works quite well.
It makes switching between the F11/F12 spindle and feed overrides quick while watching the current operation - one button for each/knob for +/-
I also have F2/F3 buttons. I only use the MPG (which hangs at the front by the control panel) for jogging, so I have gotten in the habit of pressing F3 first to get to the correct screen. I do not press any other buttons/keys after that for jogging.

You have to press F11 to enable the overrides, then either the +/- or the pendant are used to adjust speed.

I'm just in the habit now of hitting F11 as soon as the job starts running. Since I generally have the pendant in my hand for the estop button (my estop on the controller is on the side of the box, so a little out of reach from the window on the front), Generally I'm sitting in front of the window with the pendant in hand while a job is running, so either estop or speed override are right there.

I like the USB keypad idea that tmtoronto posted - I might get one of those. I use a USB keyboard/trackpad combo that sits on top of the machine, but having a cluster of buttons for the f-keys and things like homing and cycle start would be nice.
