my name is Patrick, some years ago I bought a 3D printer (Creality CR-X) and started to get in touch with creating own things. Last year I would like to buy a drilling machine, but ended up with Proxxon BFB2000 + KT150 and started to manually mill a little bit.
It after a very short time I started to try to automate this tiny thing with some stepper motors and Estlcam. It looks a bit strange, but this was already the tryout for a bigger thing.
As it was working Ok, I started building my own CNC with Fusion360. And and ordered some aluminium stuff.
The first approach was/is to go with cheap linear rails and ballscrews.
The machine has a length of 1460 mm, wide of 1105 mm and was initially about 2000 mm high. However I decided to lower the portal a bit, for a better rigidity.
Finally it turned out with a moving area of:
- Y: 808 mm (about 1200 mm with correct linear rails and ball screws)
- X: 716 mm
- Z: 165 mm (+30 mm which I currently do not use)
The frame is build from 80x80 mm heavy aluminium profiles and the portal is build from 5083 aluminium which is 20 mm thick and most parts are 200 mm wide (Portal, X Plate and Z Plate).
It is operated with a Masso G3 and closed loop Nema24 steppers and has 2 ballscrews on the Y axis (Y+B). All axis are currently moved by 1605 ballscrews.
The portal bar is supported by two 20 mm aluminium bars, so that is does not bend to much with its wide of 1105 mm.
The current spindle is an AMB FME-P 1050 with 1050 W and an ER16 collet.
