How to wire my 4 axis Sherline mill for my Masso cnc controller

Good evening chaps

I have a Sherline 4 axis mill and would like to try using my Masso cnc controller on the machine.

I have removed the stepper motor driver board from the Sherline computer which uses a 25 pin printer port cable to connect to the old controller in the Sherline computer.

Can anyone give me the pin out diagram for which pins go to which connections for the x,y,z and a connections on the Masso

Any help would much appreciated

Regards

Do you have any manuals for the mill?

We can help when we have some details to go with, but we are not miracle workers.

Without some input from you regarding the existing cabling, we can't help you.

Arie.

Hi Arie

Thank you for the reply. There are no manuals supplied with this setup from Sherline regarding actual wiring...only where to plug things in.

However,to begin with let me give you the layout:

Sherline supply an oldish style computer with linux emc2 on it...probably a pentium 3 or 4

There is a 25 pin parallel cable going to the motherboard which plugs into the 4 axis driver board powered by a 24 volt power supply.

From the driver board there are four cables going to each stepper motor for x y z and a axis on the mill.

Each axis plugs into the driver board with a plug that has five pins...same as into the stepper motor.

I am uploading a picture of the driver board and also a 25 pin adapter that I bought to allow me to take wires from the driver board to Masso

This adapter plugs into the 25 pin parallel port which would have gone to the motherboard of the old computer.

It has terminal blocks in it and each one is connected to one of the 25 pins which would allow me to take wires to the Masso without any solder work

Having powered up the board, pins 18 to 25 go to common and are common to one another

Pin numbers 3, 5, 7 9, and 10 read 5V on my test meter while board is powered

All the other pins read 0V (obviously excluding the common pins 18 to 25)

with the board powered up the stepper motors are locked up solid, waiting for a signal to drive them one way or the other

I have also uploaded a photo of a spec sheet I found on the net of Sherline stepper motor specs

Thank you for your help so far Arie

Regards

Andre

Hi Arie

Some good news

I emailed Karl Rohlin at Sherline last night to see if he would be prepared to help me with pin out details of the Sherline machine's db 25 pin parallel port

He sent me a pdf depicting the pin out which I have attached as by the look of it quite a lot of guys have looked into my original request for help.

I am not sure about the DB9 pin out_maybe that has to come out of the old computer as well.

I will check it out. We certainly have a starting point to see if I can get this thing making the right noises

I am not sure if Karl reads these pages, but if he does...THANK YOU KARL!

And thank you Arie for offering to help!

Much appreciated

Regards

The pdf was perfect.

Now just need some info on the current wiring arrangement. Where do the controller plugs connect to
  • 25pin db male plug connects to ?
  • 9pin db female plug connects to ?
  • 9pin db male plug connects to ?

Also how many stepper motors do you have? Are any "slaved" if so which axis?

Some photos of the machine and wiring would help.

When I have this info I can work out what needs to go where.

Arie.

Hi Arie

I was able to get mill running on all axes using the PDF from Karl, setup the homing sensors and have now setup the soft limits.

All running fine now. I now want to set up the Sherline lathe to run on Masso and requested the lathe software from support.

However, I received a reply saying:

All required information can be found in our Documentation or Forums.

I was under the impression Masso support emails it to the customer and I can't seem to find the software on the forum.

Please let me know how to go about getting it.

Should there be other users who want information on how to wire up the Sherline machines using the driver board from the old computers that Sherline supplied,

just drop me a line.

Thanks for the help Arie

Cheers for now

Andre

I am glad to hear that you got it working. Masso support is usually very responsive but sometimes they respond with a generic reply when you ask them how to wire up your machine. They et so many requests that they have to manage what they tackle first. It would be very helpful for other Sherline users if you could share a link or upload the document you found with the pinout information for your lathe to this forum post. it might help us trouble should your next issue.

Stephan,

Andre did supply the pinout document in post #5. What would be helpful is an explanation of the db9 connections listed in the documentation.

Arie.
