Ideas for brake release on Z axis with masso output

Is there a way to control the brake on the Z Axis using an output from the masso control? reason being we are having a hard time with the driver as we cannot pickup any suitable power from it to switch the relay to throw the brake on and off. the 50 pin I/O plug is testing our gentle nature . if possible a output that was controlled with masso directly to the brake through a masso relay would make our life a lot easier.

Hi Simo

My understanding of the Z axis brake is that there to stop the Z axis dropping under gravity when the Z axis drive is not powered.

If this is the case I would connect up one of the relays to the Estop output on Masso This will turn the relay on when the Estop is not active and you can use the Normally open contact to power the Brake because when the Estop is released the relay will be energized. When you press the Estop or turn the power off, the relay will release and turn off power to the brake which should engage it on the z axis.

If you use this method make sure you run the enable of your drives through the Masso Estop relay as well to disable the drives on an estop. This ensure they stop as soon as the brake is applied. You may be able to use the same relay contacts or you may need a 2nd relay to achieve this depending on how you have your machine wired.

@simo how did yo go with z axis brake release did you connect to the estop relay sounds like a better option than using a M code ?

We have been having a really hard time with the servo drive on the Z axis, not being able to get any output from it to be able to switch the brake relay on or off, we have had abit of a break through now with getting our PC to connect to the drive, so i'm hopeful now that we can change the parameters to allocate the brake to the I/O connector so then we can use it to switch a relay on and off. this would be the best out come.

That's good I have just installed a second relay to estop circuit the estop output relay on masso ttl relay board now has two relays connected both power at the same time one turns servo drive off the other turns brake on will do for now

I have a similar Problem. When the e-stop is active power is still on the stepper motors. The Enable goes low.
Does the Motor have an internal brake i.e stops the spindle in the z-axis from falling? The machine I have has this issue.
Has anyone else had this issue? I also opened a ticket but I thought I would look through here as well.
Does the closed-loop stepper need to be programmed for this feature?

I recently installed a new stepper motor with integrated electronic brake on my Z axis. When I powered off, I had noticed the spindle occasionally drifting down due to a combination of gravity, the ATC spindles higher mass, and a new Z axis ball screw with a higher lead. I followed the Masso docs and have the Masso ES outputting to a Masso relay module, this in turn controls my drive ENA and brake. It mainly helps when there is no power to my system, such as during a shut down at the end of the day's work.
