Linear Tool Changers

Interested in adding a Linear Tool Changer to my CNC. In your documentation you show one;

What do I need to do to get one to work? Simply buy one and set up the configuration in Masso?

Can you recommend any Linear Tool Changers that work well?

  • You can use any setup, the main thing in linear tool changer is the pneumatic tool release on the spindle, the rest is just very basic tool holder setup on the machine bed.
  • In MASSO please goto the F1 screen, then goto Tool Changer, next from the list select "2: Linear Tool Changer"
  • Then you can double click "2: Linear Tool Changer" to enter all your machine tool changer data.

Is the pneumatic tool release a part I can add to the spindle, or do you need to buy a specific spindle with this feature?

Depends on the machine but it generally come built in to the spindle. What type of spindle do you have, can you share some photos.

Currently I'm using a DeWalt DWP611, but that's only until I can afford to get a water cooled VFD.

Nothing is etched in stone, and right now I'm just in the research learning phase of this.

Was hoping that I could just add the pneumatic tool release section to a standard spindle...

In my research I also found this system, which doesn't use any pneumatic air at all. It's called the 8 Ball system;

Thats a cool system but you will need something that can be controlled by the controller to be able to lock and unlock the holder.

I was told that it's sold in Greece, and they will ship to the U.S. so I may be trying it out.

Thanks for all your help with this subject matter.

We were just talking about this with someone and they mentioned to first carefully check that it will fit your existing spindle design because it might not fit all designs.
