Spindle alarm

Today I tripped the spindle alarm due to VFD Output Over Current, so MASSO stopped dead as it should. This happened several times because the cutter was stalling the spindle due to poor chip evacuation. I was trying different formula in roughing out a 25mm deep, 25mm round pocket. These things happen and I accept the consequences.

But what was annoying was that the spindle alarm required homing the router to clear the alarm. Could the spindle alarm be changed to stop machine and allow the gcode be continued upon the reset of the spindle alarm. This of course assumes that the operator has cleared the problem that caused the alarm is the first case.

@breezy

IMHO if your machine has stalled out or crashed then it makes sense to initiate a Homing sequence to ensure that it has not deviated from the origin or lost steps. This might also serve as a good deterrent to those that are prone to taking risks with your equipment and save some tools!

Shephen,

I'm using a 8mm upcut router bit in soft pine. First off I was plunging in a pre-drilled 8mm hole with a standard WOC (as set by Fusion), the first three holes went OK and then the VFD tripped the spindle alarm when it detected an over current condition. So I changed to helixing instead of plunging which worked on the partly completed hole but tripped on the next. At that point I shut the router down and went home as I had had enough.

Last night I reworked the pocket in Fusion to do multiple depth of cuts, lift the tool to retract height when it repositioned to continue the helix, also reduced the spindle speed but maintained the feed rate, hopefully the chips will be larger (instead of very fine stringy) and be evacuated better.

MASSO stopped moving before the spindle wound down, so I don't think there were any lost steps, but I can see your point about homing if the machine crashes and there are lost steps.

I had also requested that Masso provide an alarm input for spindle cooling failure with shutdown and re-homing, but now in hindsight re-homing was not required because the coolant failure didn't stop the spindle. The variable speed coolant pump that we had on the spindle was just working on the limit of the flow switch, when running at max speed, we were getting shutdowns just as we started a run. After going through two pumps for other reasons, purchased a different design pump with a high throughput, no more problems.

Arie.
