Stepper Motor Vibrates but does not rotate

My dual stepper motors on my Y axis have been working great. All of a sudden one of the motors vibrated but did not turn. I changed the Micro Stepper Drive and the motor worked but wasn't smooth. Then it quit altogether. Makes noise and vibrates but nothing else.

I am very hesitant to put another Stepper Driver on and do not have another stepper motor - on order.

Any suggestions as to why one motor appears to have failed?

• Some times it can be a lose cable from the drive to the motor, in that case the motor will not fully stop but will vibrate and run in a strange way.
  
• Another way of checking the drive is to swap the drive with other axis drive that you know works and then see how the other motor reacts.
