Tool setting question

I didn't see anything on this elsewhere so figured I'd post my question.

I just set up auto tool setter and it seems to be working. I have not tried to run a part requiring a tool change just yet. The question I have...is it supposed to move the tool over the height guage pad every time you do a 'machine homing'? I do not have any tool offsets just yet. I plan to draw up something quick that starts off with a 1/4" flat end mill and then requires a change to a 1/4" drill bit...for ease of swapping the tool. I guess I'm not certain how it should work. Do I need to set up the tool off set for each tool first? I do occasionally get a red message on the screen to "change tool" or continue....I do not get this consistently. At this point I have only been 'testing' the machine and have not required a tool change in the middle of a 'job'.

I may be incorrect but I am attempting to set up automatic tool zero. That way when there is a call for a tool change during a job....I can swap out the tool and have it calibrate the height. I'm hoping that is correct. I could of course be wrong :)

I have watched that. I have a vise sitting on top of the mill table that is just over 4" high. My mill will not reach all the way to the table surface....as planned so I wouldn't bury a tool in the table top.

My tool setter disk is 3" off the table. This may be part of the issue. I guess my first question is this.

Why, when I issue a ctrl-alt-home command does the mill home itself then immediately move to the tool setter position, lower itself until it touches then retracts. This is every time I do a home procedure. Is this the correct operation? As I mentioned I have not drawn up a job that requires a tool change as yet. I'm just trying to understand the "Proper operation" of the auto tool height gage. I would think it would only go through the tool setting routine when called for specifically.

  1. You can have the tool setter at any height and then use the tip of the tool to set the top of the work piece using work offsets such as G54.
  2. Every time you home the machine, there might be a situation where a tool or something might have changed in the machine and that is why MASSO will always also do a tool touch every time you home to make sure it has the correct tool info.
  3. Please also wait for our next software release v3.34 due in the next few days as I have checked and there are some updates and bug fixes to auto tool zero and this will also help you setup the system easily.

Awesome! Thank you very much for the reply. I just wanted to make sure it was 'acting' appropriately.

I just completed my tramming plate and am still working to get things set up. I hope to test things out soon.

I really appreciate the support in this forum!!!
